life.death.stuff

as you know, this blog is about 'stuff'... stuff i like, stuff i don't like. it's funny how the stuff we surround ourselves with can mean so much or so little. acquiring stuff can make you happy - that's why they call it 'retail therapy'. however stuff is so much more, things that surround me run the gamut of making me soar with happiness or create profound sadness. my stuff retains the memories of parents, brothers, friends and pets past and present. the urn that contains the ashes of my beloved boston terrier oliver is one of these items. this one object that i look at every single day makes me overjoyed at the 15 years he was with me and saddens me that i will never again be able to hold or touch him. funny, how stuff does this to you.
the stuff i cherish the most is stuff from people that i love, a box of origami cranes, a book, a photograph of a moth, a ball of string. of course there is plenty of stuff from people i have never met - people who have not been alive for years. the stuff that they loved at one time has managed to end up at thrift stores, junk shops, antique shops and ebay, as one day will my stuff... and so the cycle continues - creating more memories, both happy and sad.

the dahlia garden

another sight not to be missed in volunteer park are the beautiful dahlias, they are amazing
this time of year. the garden rows are relatively shabby strips of dirt with wood stakes identifying the varieties, but the flowers are amazing to look at...

volunteer park conservatory

after brunch, we went to volunteer park on capitol hill, a beautifully designed 48-acre green space with conservatory, dahlia garden and asian art museum. the conservatory contains plants from all climates and the layout is one of the best i have seen in such a small space. you can see more on their website http://www.volunteerparkconservatory.org

a seattle adventure

after having a weekend in seattle recently, i have to say i cannot wait to go back. there were so many things to do, see, buy, eat and drink all over town. of course having the best companion and tour guides a person could ever hope for was an added bonus...
saturday was a jam-packed day of sightseeing and exploring. we started with a great brunch at 'smith' www.smithseattle.com - not only was the food delicious, the place was filled with old paintings and best of all... lots of taxidermy!

photochromatic ink + visionaire = brilliant

I have been reading about the wonders of photochromatic ink.

the amazing publication visionaire [http://www.visionaireworld.com]
has printed the new issue 56 solar using this technique. in artificial light the book is in black and white, but in sunlight the colors appear, giving the issue a new dimension. the ink is transparent, but the heat of the sun brings out its color, which becomes transparent again when the temperature lowers.

the collaboration with calvin klein features work from yoko ono, peter lindbergh, ryan mcginley, among others.

my first blog

the first entry in my blog would have to be a list. lists are what i make obsessively. lists are the only things that help me to clear my thoughts and establish new ones. lists are the only way i can remember what to do or why i am doing it. my lists are recorded in 2.9 x 8.3 inch bright orange rhodia pads - i have many of them. when the pad is not readily available, the lists are on the back of mail, receipts, envelopes, bus tickets, magazines, napkins, or any other scrap that is nearby. unfortunately those lists always get lost because they are not in THE pad.

so here is a list of a few things that i think about, things i love and things i will be blogging about in no particular order:
